Spend your summer on the beach in a fun, challenging, and responsible position working for the Galveston Island Beach Patrol.

Minimum Qualifications

(Note selections are made on a competitive basis)

  • Must be 16 or older
  • Able to swim 500 meters in 9 minutes or less
  • Pass a urine drug screen
  • Pass a background check
  • Pass the Lifeguard Training Academy

Conditions of Employment

Lifeguards will be scheduled according to their availability, but are expected to work full-time, especially weekends and holidays, throughout the summer. Beach lifeguarding is very physically demanding and guards are expected to maintain adequate levels of fitness at all times.

How to Apply

Interested applicants may pick up applications from Galveston Island Beach Patrol Headquarters on the 3rd floor the Stewart Beach Pavilion, at the Galveston Park Board of Trustees; 601 Tremont, Galveston, TX., or click here to download an application. Completed applications and a Physician signed copy of the Physical Examination Letter need to be brought to tryouts.

Tryouts and Interview Dates

Applicants will come to one of three TRYOUT DATES with a completed Appication and Physical Examination Letter (signed by a physician)At the tryout applicants will have to swim 500 meters in nine minutes or less in the UTMB Field House pool. Everyone who passes the swim will participate in an interview. Tryout and interview participants are generally finished by 1:00pm. Once applicant passes these two steps, they will be invited to participate in the Run-Swim-Run held at Stewart Beach. Once the Run-Swim-Run is successfully completed applicant must pass a urine drug screen. Applicants who meet all the above qualification will be allowed to join the Lifeguard Training Academy starting immediately after the drug screen.

Lifeguard Training

The course consists of 120 hours of training including 1st Aid, CPR, Beach lifeguarding, and Physical Training. Lifeguard candidates will be paid a training wage for the time they spend in the training course. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguard Academy, candidates will be promoted to Lifeguard 1 status and will be eligible to work for The Galveston Island Beach Patrol. **Bring Driver’s License and Social Security Card (or other I-9 accepted Identification) to the first day of the Lifeguard Training Academy, or you will not be allowed to attend!**

Returning Lifeguards

Returning lifeguards must mail back the ’”Requalification Date Postcard” to shedule the requalification swim.  Lifeguard will meet at Headquaters on scheduled date at scheduled time. ** Must be on time, bring a copy of  Driver’s License and Social Security Card, and the Physical Examination Letter (signed by a physician) to be allowed requalify.** Lifeguard must swim 1000 meters in 18 minutes or less and pass a urine drug screen on that date.
