Rookie Class of 2006
Each year, The Galveston Island Beach Patrol trains a group of Lifeguard Candidates, or “Rookies”, in a rigorous Lifeguard Training Academy. The academy is comprised of a 79 hour United States Lifesaving Association Open Water accreditation, along with an American Red Cross Lifesaving certification. Lifesaving skills are learned in a pool environment and perfected in the open water of the Gulf of Mexico.
Another 56 hours are spent on American Red Cross Emergency Response certification, and American Heart Association CPR and AED training for the professional rescuer. In the midst of all this classroom training, the rookies also take part in daily workouts to ensure they are in top physical condition by Memorial Day Weekend.
